SPECIAL Tech Wed | Redwood Materials | April 9, 2025

Redwood Materials
Wednesday, April 9, 2025
Please arrive promptly at 3pm

In this limited-access SPECIAL Tech Wednesday, you’ll tour Redwood Materials Tahoe Campus in Storey County.

During this 60- minute tour you will follow the path a lithium-ion battery takes at the end of its life.

Starting at our battery staging and sorting yard you will learn about how we collect and sort a wide diversity of battery form factors and chemistries, ranging from EV packs from automotive partners to small consumer devices.

We will then visit the Recycling operation where you will learn about how Redwood uses reductive calcination and mechanical separation to sustainably separate valuable battery metals like Lithium, Cobalt, Nickel, Aluminum, and Copper from the less valuable plastics and casing material. We’ll explain how we use the residual energy in a battery as the “fuel” to drive this process!

In Refining, we will see how temperature controls and reagents are used to further separate the mix of battery metals into increasingly valuable intermediate products.

Finally, we will visit Redwood's first Cathode Active Material plant, where we'll soon begin producing commercial-scale volumes of the most crucial component of a Lithium-ion battery, all from our recycled and refined battery materials.

As we tour the facility, we’ll point out how we’ve designed a process and campus that are exceptionally energy-efficient, relying solely on electrical power with no waste streams or wastewater. Compared to traditional methods of processing mined ore into battery-grade materials, our process uses 80% less energy, generates 70% less CO2 emissions, and requires 80% less water.

We encourage all visitors to bring old phones, laptops, power drill and cordless vacuum packs, electric toothbrushes, and any other rechargeable device or loose lithium ion battery to recycle with us while onsite. For more information about Redwood Materials consumer recycling program please visit this website.

YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO SIGN A NON-DISCLOSURE AGREEMENT ON-SITE.
