NCET Biz Tips: Create Sponsorships that Win

NCET helps you explore business and technology

Danny Heinsohn

For as far back as I can remember, I’ve always been fascinated by the commemorative value, impact, and lifetime memories created through sports.  I remember attending my first Oakland A’s baseball game with my dad toward the late 1980’s.  As we walked into the Oakland Coliseum we were handed a brand new, green 3-ring binder, with an Oakland A’s logo printed on the front which I later used to organize my baseball cards.

It didn’t make much sense back then but I remember the inside of the binder had an imprinted PG&E logo.  As a sponsor of that game, PG&E did their job in creating a lasting and memorable impression through that piece of memorabilia.

Since I began working with a start-up company in 2002 and put them on the map as an industry leader in the professional and college sports markets, I collected success stories of what worked in sports sponsorships much like the way I collected baseball cards.

Eventually, I began working with brands who partnered with sports teams and events such as the Super Bowl, Daytona 500, NCAA Tournament, Coca-Cola, Miller Lite and a number of college bowl games, to name a few.

With my own non-profit, I leveraged that experience to create Sponsorships That Win with several businesses in Northern Nevada.

If you’re a business seeking ways to stand out in a crowded market place or a non-profit  seeking to fund critical initiatives, find the answers to these 5 questions…

  1. ESTABLISH YOUR VALUE PROPOSITION - What do you have to offer that would be of value to a potential partner?  What data do you have to back it up?

  2. RALLY YOUR TRIBE - Who do you know?  More importantly, who does your board know?

  3. CREATE ALIGNMENT - Why would someone want to support your event, charity, or initiative?

  4. PLAY THE LONG GAME - Who are the right partners that will help bring your business to the next level?

  5. DEVELOP RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE MEDIA - Who do you know that can help get the word out about your event?

When you and your team have answered those questions to the best of your ability, identify the gaps and seek introductions to people who have the resources to fill those needs.
