Although there are challenges facing the technology industry in Nevada, leaders are working to grow the field in the Silver State and attract larger tech companies, foster startups and support STEM education. Recently, technology experts met at the Las Vegas office of City National Bank to discuss these challenge and opportunities. Connie Brennan, publisher of Nevada Business Magazine, served as moderator for the event.
Lately, more and more clients ask what they can do to protect their small businesses. Most understand that corporations and limited liability companies (LLCs) may shield them from personal liability for the debts and other obligations of the business; however, they seem to be unclear as to how the law works in the opposition direction. How can an owner protect their small business from claims for their own personal liabilities?
Business people with great ideas want to move on them quickly and see them flourish in the marketplace. Even new businesses often keep their eyes on an aspirational prize: the “exit strategy”. However, many businesses encounter difficulties and sometimes even debilitating conflicts during their life cycle because not enough attention was paid to the company’s organizational structure, or what could be called the company’s “entrance strategy.”
The Silver State’s technology sector is a a young but burgeoning industry segment. Another major part of the sector constitutes large, established companies, such as IGT, a gaming machines manufacturer in the North and Switch, a data center in the South. The aggregate of these corporations makes Nevada’s major population regions technology hubs. Additionally, technology firms continue to move to the state which is increasingly becoming known as a haven for tech business.
