Nevada’s Unemployment Rate Falls to 5.8 Percent in March
Nevada’s unemployment rate declined again in March 2016, down to a seasonally-adjusted 5.8 percent. Nevada’s businesses added 35,500 jobs, which equates to a growth rate of 2.8 percent over the previous year. “The State continues to narrow the gap with respect to the national unemployment rate and for the 44th consecutive month Nevada’s job growth, which is the third best in the nation, has exceeded the national average,” said Governor Brian Sandoval. “Small businesses continue to create new opportunities across Nevada and have surpassed peak pre-recession job numbers, a major milestone for the Silver State.”
NASA, UNR drone lab takes off in Reno
A long percolating joint venture between the University of Nevada, Reno and NASA officially took off on Wednesday with the unveiling of a new drone and virtual reality laboratory at Reno-Stead Airport. The Nevada Unmanned Aircraft and NextGen Collaborative Environment Laboratory or NUANCE Lab houses UNR research on airspace management as well as a link to NASA’s airspace simulation system. The facility, which is located at the Reno-Stead Airport Freedom Flight Terminal, also features an adjacent workshop for building unmanned aerial systems — more commonly known as drones.
Reno office space attracts Polish entrepreneurs
Polish start-ups hoping to break into the U.S. market will now have a place to do it in Reno. Governor Brian Sandoval and Polish officials based in Nevada held a ribbon-cutting ceremony last week for the Poland-Nevada Acceleration Space.

On shaky ground — for good reason
While earthquakes of incomprehensible magnitudes — 7s, 8s, and above on the Richter scale — happen only periodically in history, they occur with relative frequency on campus at the University of Nevada, Reno. Or, at least, simulations of such earthquakes occur. They’re happening in the Nevada Earthquake Engineering Laboratory, which houses the largest shake table array in the United States.
Healthcare technology company comes to Northern Nevada
The Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada (EDAWN) and Governor Brian Sandoval announced at a recent press conference that Grand Rounds, a company that improves healthcare by guiding patients to better physicians, is opening a new services and technology center in Reno. The company is expected to add up to 200 jobs to the region.
