According to Inc. Magazine, Northern Nevada is home to some of the nation’s fastest growing companies. To learn more, we talked with the leaders of four of Northern Nevada’s fastest growing companies and asked about the secrets to their success:
- Steve Conine, Talent Framework
- Kunall Patel, Davidson’s Organic Tea
- Relina Shirley, HIDEit Mounts
- Ty Whitaker, The Abbi Agency
Significantly, each of their suggestions and tips focused on the people with whom they work. Here’s what they recommend:
Benefits Matter: Reno’s unemployment rate is 2.7%, our lowest rate in 20 years, which makes it harder to attract and retain employees. Benefits are now often as important – or more important – than wages, so offering excellent free or low-cost benefits gives you a significant advantage in the employment marketplace.
Utilize employee strengths: Every member of your team is different. If a person is detail-oriented, place them in a detail-oriented job function. If they are a people-person, utilizing them in a people-facing role.
Break Down Silos: Clients come to a company, for example, for the magic that happens when web developers, designers, public relations experts and marketers all put their minds together. Breaking down silos and allowing the best minds within a company to collaborate and create together is a simple but critical way to unlock those truly transformational ideas.
Set Achievable Goals: Set individual and team goals that are achievable, measurable, and directly related to revenue generation, customer retention, etc.
Leave Your Ego at the Door: Ego is the enemy of both creativity and collaboration. You may love the confidence shown by your team, but you should push for a workplace that replaces ego with a receptiveness to all ideas and a hunger to constantly learn. Ego prioritizes the individual over the team, and a company’s success is built on the power of a team that transcends any one individual’s talents.
Like Nike Says, Just Do It: If you have a great idea, at some point you must gamble, roll the dice and see what happens.
You’ll Need to Learn Something New Every Day: Learning never ends.
Hiring Takes Time and Energy: So, you must be ready and willing to roll up your sleeves to get the job done.
Take Advantage of Northern Nevada’s Business Support Infrastructure: Northern Nevada has an incredible business support structure, both from local nonprofit organizations as well as from your peers. Organizations include Nevada Industry Excellence (NVIE), Nevada Small Business Development Center (NSBDC), Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada (EDAWN), SCORE and many others, while peer groups include The Alternative Board (TAB), Entrepreneurs’ Organization and many others.
