A common mindset regarding robots is that they are here to take our jobs or take over the world. The goal of Robo Day is to show the citizens of Las Vegas that robots can bring jobs and other powerful benefits in the entertainment, economic, and educational sectors.
The Robo Day keynote will be presented by NASA/JPL Chief Engineer, Christopher McQuin, who has worked on multiple robotics projects for both the Moon and Mars. McQuin will be giving a presentation on human related robotics systems and a sneak peek into the next generation of NASA robotics.
Robots can also become a catalyst to create higher paying jobs across a multitude of industries. Global manufacturer, KUKA Robotics, is coming to speak about the concept of “reshoring,” and how Las Vegas and North Las Vegas is perfectly positioned to take advantage of this profitable opportunity.
Art lovers attending Robo Day will get an exclusive chance to check out a demo reel made especially for Robo Day, from the masters of robotic cinematography, Bot & Dolly; the studio responsible for incorporating robots into the new Blue Man Group show. This presentation features the cutting edge of robotics in film making and other creative applications, such as mural painting and music visualization.
Robots are boosting graduation rates and getting kids excited again about learning math and science. At Robo Day, parents can discover how organizations like FIRST Robotics, is fostering national champions like local Team 987. Professors from UNLV will also be highlighting the tremendous impact that robots have had on their student’s career choices.
In addition to these inspirational topics, Robo Day will feature a large interactive area that attendees can visit throughout the day. Kids and families will get the opportunity to play with real robots and their makers.
Local high school robotics teams will showcase their ingenious robotics designs that solve challenges and win awards. Also in the interactive area, Airmen from the 99th Civil Engineer Squadron on Nellis Air Force Base will display one of their Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Robots. These machines were created to disarm explosive devices and help save the lives of civilians and military troops.
The interactive area will kick off at 11:00 am and remain open to the public until 5:00 pm in the lobby of the Horn Theater. Lectures will begin at 1:00 pm with our keynote, and continue until 5:00 pm in the Morse Arberry Jr. Telecommunications Building.
