SCORE is a nationwide group of volunteers focused on helping individuals establish and grow businesses. These volunteers have a wide diversity of skills they share at no cost to the clients. The Northern Nevada SCORE Chapter has individuals with expertise in communications, social media, business services, business operations, marketing, sales, administration, human resources, budgets, manufacturing, product development, contracting and internet technologies among others. These mentors are all well versed in current trends and draw on many years of executive experience in their industries.
I think we can agree that positive word-of-mouth is one of the best marketing tools any business can have. To get this to work, you need what I like to call “war stories” that are affirming. These are customer experiences about doing business with you that are so compelling they want to share the story with their friends and colleagues. For that to happen, you truly need to have over-the-top customer service that consistently exceeds expectations. When I owned my printing franchise, we used an over-the-top guarantee with the tag line: It’s Right, It’s On Time or It’s Free. If the customer was not 100 percent happy with the job, we reprinted it for them and gave it to them for free. The same was true if we missed their due date; it was free.
With the start of the New Year, historically there is an increase in individuals looking to start new businesses. The Nevada Small Business Development Center (Nevada SBDC) sees a spike in requests for counseling each year during this time. In fact, January 2015 had 33 percent more new clients than any other month of the year, with the total for January and February accounting for almost 25 percent of all new clients for the year.

Supported by grants from the US Small Business Administration, SCORE is the nation’s largest volunteer business mentoring service.
