WHAT IS IT?
The Pack Internship Grant Program (PIGP) provides funding for individual student internships with local businesses, non-profits and public agencies. Our program seeks to assist local organizations in developing substantive internship opportunities for Nevada students. In addition to providing grant funding for internships (we provide student wages at $12/hour for 120 hours), we will work with you to create a new internship program or renovate an existing internship to ensure a mutually beneficial professional experience.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY?
Any organization in the greater Reno-Tahoe area is eligible to apply for a grant funded position. The Pack Internship Grant Program serves full-time undergraduate students of all majors and degree programs; employer partners are selected with consideration for providing a diverse set of opportunities to a diverse student population.
Organizations may also participate with self-funded internships. Self-funding allows an employer to take advantage of the PIGP support as well as marketing and recruitment for the opportunity. The Nevada Career Studio promotes all PIGP opportunities and provides a briefly pre-screened packet of applicants to employers.
Employers then review applications, conduct interviews and make intern selection.
WHAT IS THE DURATION OF THE PROGRAM?
The internships take place during the Spring 2018 semester (January – April). To prepare students and employers for beginning the internship in January, program preparations begin in summer 2017. Employer applications are due June 30, 2017; employer participants will be confirmed during Summer 2017; employers will interview applicants and select interns in November; and interns will begin work in January 2018.
Employers will work with their selected intern to set a start date and work schedule for the Spring semester.
Interns should work a total of 120 hours, which is approximately 8-15 hours a week, to complete the internship within the semester.
WHAT ROLE WILL YOU PLAY?
Employers will provide a mutually beneficial internship experience that offers students the opportunity to work with talented professionals and help shape their future careers. This includes on-site training, ongoing supervision, professional development and evaluations for the intern, who will contribute their time, unique skill set and fresh perspective to your organization.
The Nevada Career Studio supports participating employers and the program in a few specific ways, including: arranging pre- and post-assessments to facilitate goal-setting for the internship; online mid-term and final evaluations to get feedback to better support the participants; and a mid-term site visit to support the ongoing development of the intern and ensure a positive experience for all participants. Additionally, the Career Studio will provide ongoing individual support to all participants, as needed.
